How to read this sheet

Start in the title block on the right edge. It names the sheet A-101, the drawing Level 1 Floor Plan, the scale 1/8" = 1'-0", the issue date, and a revision table with one entry. Everything else on the sheet is read against those five facts.

Next find the grid. Letters A to E run west to east and numbers 1 to 3 run north to south, and the bubbles sit outside the building at the ends of the long centre lines. The grid is the address system: a column is at C2, a section is cut on a line you can name, and a consultant sheet drawn on the same grid can be laid over this one. The dimension string immediately outside the grid bubbles gives the bay spacing, 20'-0" each way, and the string outside that gives the overall, 80'-0" east to west and 40'-0" north to south.

Read the dimensions in three layers. The outermost is the overall. The middle is grid to grid. The innermost locates partitions off grid A and grid 1, and those five and three runs each add up to the overall, which is the arithmetic check a drawing gives you for free. Inside the plan, a dimension marked CLR is different: it is a clear distance to hold, not a distance to a construction line. The one across Corridor 114 reads 6'-0" CLR and it is drawn across the corridor, between the two partition faces, not along it.

The tags carry the rest. A room tag is a name over a boxed number. A door tag is a hexagon holding the room number plus a letter, and every one of them has a row in the door schedule on A-601. A window tag is a diamond holding a type, W1 through W6, and the type carries the size. A hexagon on its own is a keynote and its number is spelled out in the keynote list on the left of the sheet.

Finally, follow the callouts. Two section markers cut the building and both point at A-301. One wall section callout points at 3/A-401. One dashed circle marks an area enlarged as 1/A-501. A cloud with a triangle 1 beside it marks what changed in revision 1, and the revision table in the title block says what and when.
