An elevation is a flat view of one face of the building, drawn with no perspective at all, so anything parallel to that face measures true on the paper. There are four of them here, one for each side, stacked down the sheet and all at 1/8" = 1'-0".
Start with the names. An elevation is named for the face it shows, not for the direction you are looking in. The north elevation is the north face of the building, seen by somebody standing outside to the north and looking south. The consequence is that the grid runs the other way on opposite elevations. On the north elevation grid A is on the left and E on the right, exactly as it is on the floor plan. Walk round to the south side and A is now on your right, so the south elevation reads E, D, C, B, A from left to right. Read the bubbles before you point at anything.
Next find the horizontal lines that run right across each elevation and out past the building on both sides. Those are the level datums, and they are the spine of every vertical dimension in the set. Level 1 is the project datum and is written 0'-0". Level 2 is 14'-0" above it, the roof bearing is 26'-0" and the top of the parapet is 29'-0". Each line carries a small bubble with a code and a caption with the full name and the height. The same four numbers appear on A-301 and on the cover sheet, because they all read the same table.
The vertical dimension string on the right of the north elevation breaks that 29'-0" into its parts: 14'-0" floor to floor, 12'-0" from Level 2 up to the roof bearing, and 3'-0" of parapet above that. Add the three and you get the overall, which is the same self checking arithmetic a plan gives you horizontally.
Openings are drawn where the plans put them and at the heights the window units carry. Watch the datum a head or sill dimension starts from. The head dimension at the Children's Library window is measured from Level 1, so it reads 10'-0". The head dimension at the Study Room A window on Level 2 is measured from the Level 2 floor, so it reads 8'-0" even though that head is 22'-0" above the project datum. Both are correct and they are not the same number.
Finally the materials. Two hatches divide each face: brick veneer from grade up to the roof bearing line, and prefinished metal panel on the parapet above it. The hexagons are material keynotes and the list on the right of the sheet spells them out, with two of them handing you on to a detail on A-401.
