How to read this sheet

This is the sheet where a wall stops being a thickness and becomes a list of materials. Everything on it is drawn at least six times the size of the same wall on a floor plan, which is the whole reason the sheet exists.

There are two scales here and the title block says both. The two wall sections on the left are at 3/4" = 1'-0". The four details on the right are at 1 1/2" = 1'-0", twice as large again. Never measure across the sheet without checking which drawing you are in: a quarter inch of paper is four inches of building in a wall section and two inches in a detail.

Wall section 3 is the typical exterior wall, drawn from the bottom of the footing to the top of the parapet. It cannot fit on the paper at this scale in one piece, so it is drawn in two parts with a break line at each cut. A break line does not mean the wall ends. It means the middle of it is the same as what you can see and has been left out to save paper.

Read the assembly outside face first. Brick veneer, then a drained and vented air cavity, then continuous rigid insulation, then sheathing with the air barrier on it, then the 6 in steel stud, then gypsum board. Every one of those layers has a leader naming it, and the same six layers are listed in order at the right of the sheet. The leaders are the point of the drawing: a hatch pattern tells you a material family and a leader tells you exactly what to buy.

Wall section 4 is the same wall taken at a window, cut at the Study Room A window on Level 2. Two bubbles sit on it, 5 at the head and 6 at the sill, and each one names a detail on this same sheet where that piece is drawn again at twice the size. That is how a callout works whether it points at another sheet or at the drawing beside it: the number over the sheet, the number first.

The four details do the same job at the four places a wall assembly has to change: where it stops at the top, where it meets the ground, and where it turns into a window at the head and the sill. Each one is dimensioned and each one carries leaders. Detail 1 and detail 2 are called out on wall section 3, and the two window details on wall section 4, so you can always walk from the plan to the wall section to the detail without guessing.
