An electrical plan is two drawings printed on top of each other: the lighting and the power. Both sit on the same screened architectural background from A-101, and neither of them is drawn to scale in the way a wall is. An electrical symbol shows what a device is and roughly where it goes; the exact mounting height comes from the notes and the interior elevations, not from measuring the plan.
Read the lighting first. Each fixture is a symbol with a type letter behind it, and the type letter is the link to the lighting fixture schedule at the bottom of the sheet. Type A is the recessed troffer that lights the large rooms. Type B is the small downlight used in the vestibule, the corridor and the toilet rooms. Type C is an exit sign, and it is drawn wherever an exit has to be marked. The schedule gives the lamp, the wattage and the mounting for each type, so counting fixtures on the plan and reading the schedule row is how you get a load or a lamp order.
Now read the power. A circle with a line through it and a stem is a duplex receptacle, two outlets. The same symbol with extra bars is a quadruplex, four outlets. The one marked GFCI is ground fault protected, which is what goes anywhere near water. An S is a single pole switch and an S with a small 3 is a three way switch, always one of a pair, so the corridor lights can be turned on from either end.
The part that ties the sheet together is the home run. A home run is a short line ending in an arrow with a label like LP1-3 beside it. Read it as panel LP1, circuit 3. The arrow does not show the route of the wire; it says that everything on that branch goes back to that circuit in that panel. Now find panel LP1 on the plan, in Electrical 111, and find circuit 3 in the panel schedule. The schedule row names the circuit, gives the breaker size in amperes, the number of poles, and the connected load in volt amperes. Every home run label on this plan has a row, and reading tag to row is the drill.
Two things new readers get wrong. First, a two pole breaker occupies two spaces and serves a 208 volt load such as the water heater, so a 40 A two pole entry is not the same as two 20 A single pole entries. Second, spare and space are different: a spare is a breaker installed with nothing on it, a space is an empty slot with no breaker at all.
