How to read this sheet

A cover sheet does one job: it tells you what the set is and where everything in it lives. Read it before you read any drawing, because every other sheet assumes you already have.

The block at the top left names the project, the address, the owner, and the issue. "Issued for construction" is the status of this set, and the date beside it is the date the set was released. Under it is the revision line: revision 1 was issued on 2026-09-01 and it changed the community room door and the corridor clear width. If you are holding a printed sheet, that line is how you tell whether you are holding the current one.

The sheet index is the table of contents and it is the single most used part of a cover sheet. Sheet numbers follow the discipline and sheet type convention: a letter for the discipline (G general, C civil, A architectural, S structural, M mechanical, P plumbing, E electrical), then a hyphen, then a digit for the sheet type, then a two digit sequence. So A-101 is architectural, type 1 which is plans, first in sequence. A-301 is architectural sections, A-401 details, A-501 enlarged views, A-601 schedules. Once you know the pattern you can find a sheet you have never seen: if a plan sends you to 3/A-401, you know before you turn the page that you are going to an architectural detail.

The project data block gives the numbers the whole set is built on, including the level datums. Level 1 is 0'-0", Level 2 is 14'-0", roof bearing is 26'-0", top of parapet is 29'-0". Every height on the sections and elevations is measured from those four lines.

The code summary is a short statement of occupancy, construction type and exiting. The vicinity map at 1" = 20' locates the building on its lot at the engineer's scale, which is the other scale family in this set, and the typical symbols block is a short preview of the full legend on G-002.
