G-002 is the sheet nobody reads first and everybody comes back to. It carries no building. It carries the vocabulary the rest of the set is written in, and it is split into four blocks: the symbols legend, the material hatches and line types, the abbreviations, and the general notes.
Start with the symbols legend on the left. Every symbol here is drawn by the same code that draws it on a plan, at the same proportions, so what you learn here you will recognise on A-101 without translating. Work down it once and name each one out loud. A circle split by a horizontal line with a number over a sheet number is a marker: a section marker if it has a tail and an arrow, a detail bubble if it does not. A four armed circle is an interior elevation marker and each arm carries the drawing number for the wall it points at. A box with a name over a number is a room tag. A hexagon holding a room number and a letter is a door tag; a hexagon holding a bare number is a keynote, and the two look alike until you notice what is inside them. A diamond is a window type. A triangle with a number in it is a revision triangle, and it always sits beside a cloud.
Below the symbols are the material hatches and the line types. A hatch tells you what a cut piece is made of, and you only meet hatches where the drawing cuts something: sections, details, and the poche of a wall in plan. The line types matter just as much. A solid line is something seen. A dashed line is something above or below the plane you are looking at, which is how a plan shows a beam overhead or a footing below. A long dash and short dash line is a centre line, a grid line or a property line.
The abbreviation tables in the middle are the ones worth learning by heart, because a drawing note is written in them. CLR is a clear distance to hold. TYP means the note applies wherever the same condition happens. UNO means the general rule stands unless a local note overrides it. AFF is above finish floor, which is where mounting heights are measured from. VIF is verify in field, and it is an instruction, not a disclaimer.
The general notes on the right are contract language. They are short, they are numbered, and they govern everywhere unless a sheet says otherwise. Note one and note two are the two that catch new readers: verify in the field, and do not scale the drawing. A print can be resized, a plotter can stretch, and a scale rule laid on paper is a guess. If the number you need is not written down, ask for it.
