How to read this sheet

A foundation plan looks like a floor plan with most of the building rubbed out, and that is exactly what it is. The walls you can see faintly are the architect's, screened back so you know which room you are standing in. They carry no dimensions on this sheet. Everything drawn in full weight belongs to the engineer: the grid, the columns, the footings, and the notes that tell you how the concrete is placed.

Start with the grid, because it is shared with A-101. The same five letters and three numbers land on the same lines, so a footing at C2 on this sheet is under the column at C2 on the architectural plan. That is the whole point of a grid: it lets two consultants draw the same building without ever measuring from each other's walls. The dimensions outside the grid bubbles are to grid lines, which here are the centre lines of the columns and of the continuous footing under the exterior wall.

There are two families of footing on this plan and they are drawn differently because they mean different things. Under every exterior wall runs a continuous strip footing, drawn as a pair of hidden lines because it is buried below the slab you would be standing on. At every grid intersection there is a spread footing, a square pad drawn hidden with its tag beside it. A tag is not a size: it is a key into the footing schedule on this sheet, and the schedule gives the size, the thickness, the bottom of footing elevation and the reinforcing. F1 is the larger pad and it appears only at the three interior columns on grid 2, because those columns collect floor and roof load from two bays instead of one. F2 is the smaller pad everywhere else. Reading the tag and skipping the schedule is how a footing gets poured at the wrong size.

Two section marks on the plan point back at this same sheet. That is normal: a small detail usually lives on the sheet that needed it. The marker with 2 over S-101 cuts the exterior wall and takes you to the typical strip footing section, and the one with 3 over S-101 cuts a column and takes you to the typical spread footing section. Both are drawn at 3/4" = 1'-0", six times the size of the plan, which is why they can show a slab thickness and a bar that the plan cannot.

Read the two sections together with the schedule. The section shows you the shape and where each piece sits relative to the finish floor at 0'-0"; the schedule gives the numbers that change from tag to tag. Neither one alone is enough to build from.
