How to read this sheet

A framing plan is a plan of what holds the floor up, drawn as if you were looking down on the steel with the floor deck taken away. The screened lines under it are the architect's Level 2 plan, there so you can tell a beam over a corridor from a beam over a study room. They carry no dimensions on this sheet.

The heavy lines are beams, and each one carries its mark along the line. A mark like W16x26 is a wide flange shape sixteen inches deep weighing twenty six pounds per foot; W12x19 is a shallower, lighter one. Read the plan by grid: the beams on grids 1 and 3 are the edge beams, the beams on grid 2 are the heavier interior beams because they collect load from a bay on each side, and the beams running north to south along the letter grids tie the columns together. Two of the grid 2 beams carry MC after the mark and a filled dot at each end. That is the moment frame, and it is the reason those two connections are welded rather than bolted through a clip.

Between the beams are the joists. They are not drawn one by one on a plan like this; instead each bay carries a double headed arrow that shows which way the joists span, and a note that gives the designation and the spacing, here 18K5 at 4'-0" on centre. The arrow is the single most misread thing on a framing plan. It is not a dimension line and it is not one member: it says every joist in this bay runs this way, from that beam to that beam. Turn the arrow ninety degrees and the whole floor is framed the other way.

The joists span 20'-0" here, which is the bay size the grid gave the building, and they bear on the top flange of the beam, which is what lets the deck run continuously over them. A designation like 18K5 tells you the depth in inches and the load series, so 18K5 is an eighteen inch deep joist. Depth matters to more trades than the steel erector: a duct or a pipe crossing under an eighteen inch joist has that much less room above the ceiling.

At the stair and the elevator there is a hole in the floor, and a hole in a floor has to be framed. Follow the two heavy lines around it: a beam down the east side of the opening from grid 2 to grid 3, and a header across its north side. No joist crosses the opening, and the joists that would have landed there bear on the header instead. Any opening you meet on a framing plan should have that pattern around it, and if it does not, that is a coordination question for the engineer rather than a decision for the field.
