A callout is a circle or a bubble split across the middle. The number above the line is the drawing number on the destination sheet. The number or letters below the line are the sheet number. Spoken or typed, the two are written with a slash between them, so 3 over A-401 becomes 3/A-401, read as detail three on sheet A dash four zero one.

That means the resolution is two steps, not one. Turning to A-401 is the first step and it is not the answer, because a sheet can hold half a dozen drawings. The second step is finding the drawing whose title begins with a 3. Drawing titles carry their number in front for exactly this reason, and they are underlined and set larger than the rest of the annotation so they can be found at a glance.

Where a callout points at a drawing on the same sheet, the lower half often carries a dash or the same sheet number rather than being left blank, so that the symbol still reads as complete and nobody wonders whether something was omitted.

Section markers

A section marker is a split circle with a tail and an arrowhead, and it usually sits at one end of a cut line that runs across the plan. The cut line shows where the slice is taken and the arrow shows which way you look after the cut is made. A pair of markers at the two ends of a long cut is common, and both carry the same drawing and sheet number, because they refer to the same drawing.

A cut line may jog rather than run straight, so that one section can catch two interesting conditions. When it does, the section drawing is still presented as a single flat view, and the jog is either ignored in the drawing or noted. That is a convention worth knowing, because a jogged section can appear to show two things at the same distance that are not at the same distance in reality.

The direction of view is the part most often misread. If the arrows point down the sheet, the section is looking toward the bottom of the plan, so what appears on the left of the section is what is on the left when you stand at the cut and face that way. Turning the plan physically until the arrows point at you removes the mental rotation entirely, and is what most people end up doing.

Detail bubbles and enlarged plan callouts

A detail bubble is the same split circle without a cut line, and it is usually drawn with a dashed circle or rectangle around the area of the parent drawing being redrawn at a larger scale. That boundary is real information: it tells you exactly how much of what you are looking at is covered by the detail, so you know where the detail begins and where it stops applying.

An enlarged plan callout works the same way at a bigger footprint, marking a region of a floor plan that is redrawn at a larger scale on another sheet. Toilet rooms, stairs, lifts and kitchens are the usual candidates, because each of them has clearances and fixtures that cannot be drawn at plan scale.

A detail can itself contain further bubbles. That is the ladder of a set: a plan sends you to a wall section, the wall section sends you to a sill detail, the sill detail may send you to a larger drawing of the flashing. Each rung answers a narrower question in more depth, and stopping at the first rung is the most common way to miss the answer you actually needed.

Elevation markers, interior and exterior

An interior elevation marker is a circle with four arms, one pointing at each wall of a room, each arm carrying its own drawing number. One symbol therefore sends you to up to four drawings, and the arm pointing at a wall is the drawing of that wall. Where only two walls are drawn, only two arms carry numbers and the others are blank, which is a statement rather than an omission.

Exterior elevations are usually not called out from the plan at all, because they are named by compass direction and located by the north arrow. That is worth knowing so you do not go looking for a marker that was never going to be there. Where an exterior elevation is unusual, for instance a small return wall, a callout may appear.

Whatever the shape, the discipline is the same: read the shape to know what kind of drawing waits, read the top number to know which drawing on the destination sheet, read the bottom to know where to go.

Match lines, and callouts that point nowhere

A match line is used when a drawing is too big for one sheet. It is a heavy dashed line with a label naming the drawing that continues past it. Everything on your side belongs to this drawing and everything past it belongs to the one named, and the two normally overlap slightly so that nothing falls into a gap between sheets. Treat a match line as a wall you cannot walk through until the other sheet is in front of you.

Occasionally a callout names a sheet or a drawing that does not exist. That is a defect in the set rather than a puzzle to solve. Write it down and ask, because the two obvious guesses, that the number is a typing error or that the drawing was deleted, lead to completely different actions. Building to a superseded detail because it seemed like the one that was meant is a genuinely expensive mistake.

A set that has been coordinated will have every callout checked against the sheet index. That check is mechanical and it is exactly the kind of thing worth verifying yourself on an unfamiliar set: pick a handful of markers, confirm each names a sheet that exists and a drawing on it that exists, and you will learn quickly how carefully the set was assembled.
