The lesson
A scale is a promise about paper. It says how many feet of building one inch of paper stands for, and every drawing is drawn to one. Written the way a drafter writes it, one eighth of an inch equals one foot means that an eighth of an inch on the sheet is a foot of wall. Turn that around and a whole inch of paper holds eight of those eighths, so an inch on the paper is eight feet of building. That second form, feet per inch of paper, is the one worth carrying in your head, because it is the number you multiply by.
- One eighth inch equals one foot: eight feet of building per inch of paper. Overall plans of a small building.
- One quarter inch equals one foot: four feet per inch. Enlarged plans, interior elevations, small buildings.
- Three quarter inch equals one foot: one and one third feet per inch. Wall sections, where layers must be seen.
- One and a half inch equals one foot: two thirds of a foot per inch. Details of a joint or a flashing.
- One inch equals twenty feet: twenty feet per inch. Site plans, on the engineer's scale rather than the architect's.
There are two families and they are not interchangeable. Architect's scales are written as a fraction of an inch to the foot and are used for buildings. Engineer's scales are written as one inch to a round number of feet and are used for sites, roads and utilities, because a site plan covering three hundred feet at an architect's scale would need a sheet the size of a door. If you reach for the wrong family you do not get a slightly wrong answer, you get one that is wrong by an awkward factor and looks plausible.
Two questions that are not the same
Reading a dimension means finding the number the drafter wrote. Scaling means measuring the paper and converting. The first is what the drawing says. The second is what the drawing shows. When they disagree, the written dimension wins, every time.
That rule is worth dwelling on. Drawings are produced from a model and printed, and printing is where the errors creep in: a sheet reduced to fit a smaller plotter, a page scaled by a photocopier, a PDF printed with fit to page ticked. None of those change the numbers written on the drawing and all of them change what a rule reads. The written dimension survives every one of them. That is why the general notes on a real set say plainly that you should not scale the drawing, and why a missing dimension is a question for the office rather than something to measure your way around.
Try it on A-101Measure a bay you already know
The grid on A-101 runs at twenty foot bays and the dimension string says so. Switch on Measure, click grid A then grid B, and pick the one eighth inch scale. The reading should land on twenty feet. Now pick the quarter inch scale instead and watch the same two clicks read ten feet, which is the entire lesson in one mistake.

Picking the wrong edge of an architect's rule is the classic error, and it has a shape you can predict. The quarter inch scale is twice the eighth inch scale, so reading an eighth inch drawing on the quarter inch edge halves everything. Every wrong answer of that kind is off by a clean ratio, never by a random amount, which is a useful check: if your measurement is exactly half or exactly double something believable, you have the wrong scale rather than a bad measurement.
Scale also tells you what a drawing is allowed to show. At an eighth of an inch to the foot a stud wall is a sixteenth of an inch wide on the paper, so it is drawn as two lines with poche between them and nothing else. The sheathing, the air gap, the brick and the flashing are all inside that sixteenth of an inch and cannot be drawn. That is not laziness, it is arithmetic, and it is why wall sections exist at three quarters of an inch to the foot. A larger scale is not a bigger picture of the same information, it is more information.
One view, one scale
Scale belongs to a view, not to a sheet. A sheet can hold a plan at one eighth and an enlarged plan at one quarter, each with its own title and its own bar. Read the scale under the drawing you are actually looking at.
Try it on A-101Read a clear dimension instead of measuring it
The corridor on A-101 carries a dimension marked CLR across it. Read the number rather than measuring, then measure the same two faces and compare. The two should agree, and when they do not, the written number is the one the building gets built to.

Finally, get comfortable going in both directions. Feet from paper is measure and multiply: two and a quarter inches at eight feet per inch is eighteen feet. Paper from feet is divide: a thirty two foot room at eight feet per inch takes four inches of paper, which is how you know before you start whether a drawing will fit on the sheet at the scale you want. Drafters do that second calculation constantly, and doing it once yourself makes the whole system stop feeling arbitrary.
