The lesson
A detail is a drawing that exists because the scale of the sheet it came from could not hold the information. At an eighth of an inch to the foot an exterior wall is a sixteenth of an inch wide, and everything that matters about it, the sheathing, the air gap, the insulation, the flashing, the brick tie, lives inside that sixteenth. Going to three quarters of an inch to the foot makes the same wall four and a half inches wide on the paper, and suddenly there is room to draw the truth.
A bigger scale is more information
A detail is not a magnified copy of the plan. It is a different drawing, made by somebody who then had space to say what the assembly actually is. Expect to find lines there that do not exist anywhere else in the set.
Getting there is a callout. A detail bubble is a split circle, drawing number over sheet number, and it is often drawn with a dashed circle or rectangle around the piece of the parent drawing being enlarged. That boundary is doing real work: it tells you exactly how much of what you are looking at is redrawn at the larger scale, so you know where the detail starts and stops. A wall section callout does the same job with a cut line and an arrow, because a wall section is a section like any other, just taken at a bigger scale through less building.

On A-101, find the marker on the east side that points at A-401 and read its two numbers. That marker is the reason the wall section exists: somebody standing on the plan needed to know how that wall is built, and the plan could not answer at the scale it is drawn.

A wall section is read from the outside in, layer by layer, and from the bottom up, condition by condition. Reading it outside in tells you the assembly: the finish, the drainage cavity, the water resistive barrier, the sheathing, the framing, the insulation, the interior finish. Reading it bottom up tells you the conditions: how the wall meets the foundation, how it meets each floor, how it meets the head of a window, how it meets the roof and the parapet. Those transitions are where buildings leak, which is why they are drawn at all.
Hatch patterns do most of the naming: concrete, masonry, insulation, wood, steel and gypsum each have their own.
Leaders and keynotes carry the words, because there is no room to write inside a two inch cavity.
Dimensions at this scale are small and precise, often in inches rather than feet and inches.
A break line means the drawing has skipped a boring stretch of wall to fit the sheet.
A further bubble inside a wall section sends you to an even larger detail of one joint.
That last point is the ladder. A plan sends you to a wall section, and the wall section sends you to a detail of the sill flashing, and that detail may be drawn at one and a half inches to the foot or larger. Each rung answers a narrower question in more depth. Somebody learning to read a set often stops at the first rung and assumes the wall section is the final word; it usually is not, and the bubbles on it are telling you so.
The break line is not an error
A wall section with a zigzag through the middle of a floor has not been drawn badly. It has been cut to fit the sheet because ten feet of unchanging wall teaches nothing. The dimensions still describe the full height.
Details are also where the specification and the drawing meet. A detail rarely names a manufacturer; it names a material and a thickness and leaves the performance requirement to the specification section. That division is deliberate, and it means a question about which product to use is a specification question, while a question about how the pieces are arranged is a drawing question. Knowing which document to open is half of reading a set well.

Open the wall sections and pick one. Starting at the outside face, name each layer as you move inward, using the hatch and the keynotes. Then go back to the bottom and work up through each condition. Two passes, two different kinds of answer.

Try it on A-101See what the small scale had to leave out
Look at the same exterior wall on the Level 1 plan. It is two lines with poche between them, about a foot thick. Everything you just read in the wall section is inside that band. Holding both pictures at once is what it means to read a set rather than a drawing.
