The lesson
A schedule is a table that stops a drawing from becoming unreadable. There are twenty eight doors in this building and each one has a width, a height, a leaf type, a material, a frame, a rating, a hardware group and a remark. Writing all of that beside each door on the plan would bury the plan. So the plan carries a tag, one short mark, and the tag is the key into a table where all the properties live in columns.
Tag, row, type
Three steps and no guessing. Find the tag on the plan. Find the row with that tag in the schedule. Read across the row, and where the row names a type mark, find that type drawn in elevation.
The door schedule is the clearest example. Every row starts with the door number, which is the same mark you read on the plan, and then runs across: which room it serves, the leaf size, the door type, the frame type, the material, the fire rating and any remarks. Reading across a row is reading a specification for one door. Reading down a column is a different and equally useful act: scan the rating column and you have found every rated door in the building without looking at a single plan.
The tag column is the key, and it matches the tag drawn on the plan exactly, character for character.
Size columns give width and height of one leaf, so a pair is twice the width in the opening.
The type column is a mark, not a description, and it points at a type drawn elsewhere on the sheet.
The rating column is in minutes and is blank where a door is unrated.
Remarks carry the exceptions, and a remark is the most likely place for the thing that will surprise you.
The type column is where beginners stop too early. A schedule row saying the door is a flush type is not the whole answer, because a type mark refers to a small elevation drawn on the same sheet showing the shape of the leaf, the position of any glazing and the panel arrangement. The row gives the numbers; the type elevation gives the shape. Both are needed, and the schedule assumes you will look at the second one.

Window schedules work the same way with one important difference: the tag is a type mark rather than a unique number. Twelve windows on a plan may all carry the mark W5, because they are all the same window. The schedule has one row for W5 giving its size, material, operation and glazing, and the plan is what tells you how many there are and where. That split is efficient and it trips people up, because counting rows in a window schedule does not count windows.
A room finish schedule is organised by room number instead. Each row names a room and gives the floor, base, wall and ceiling finish, and often the ceiling height. It is the one schedule that is easier to read down than across, because you are usually asking what the finish is in a given place rather than where a given finish occurs. The room numbers in it must match the room tags on the plan exactly, and a mismatch is a defect worth reporting.
The schedule and the plan must agree
Every tag on a plan has a row, and every row has at least one tag. A row with no tag means something was deleted from a drawing and not from the table. A tag with no row means the reverse. Both are worth a question.
Schedules are also where the hardware group hides. A group code in a door schedule points at a list in the specification giving hinges, closer, lock, stop and seals for that door. The drawing set will not tell you which lock; it tells you which group, and the group is defined in a document that is not a drawing at all. That handoff between the schedule and the specification is one of the places where a set stops being self contained, and it helps to know that before you go looking for an answer that was never on the paper.
